Schedule & Curriculum
A Workshop On Compassionate Communication and Buddhist Mindfulness, to be held via Zoom, meeting every other week on Tuesdays 4-5:30 pm MT, September 19, 2023 – February 14, 2023. The curriculum follows closely the chapters in Marshall’s book Nonviolent Communication – A Language of Life, 3rd Edition.
Participants are asked to purchase in advance the book Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life, 3rd Edition, by Marshall Rosenberg, PhD.
Also, please access and print the Feelings Inventory List (get pdf download) and Needs Inventory List (get pdf download) that are published on the CNVC website (www.cnvc.org); we will be using these lists in every class. You can also access and print the first chapter of Marshall’s book for free here.
Each 2-hour class, held via Zoom, is structured to provide 10 minutes guided meditation, 20 minutes talk by Paul, and 90 minutes of group participation. Homework assignments are offered before each class to guide you in both study and practice between our Zoom meetings. In addition, each person may be assigned an “empathy buddy” as an opportunity to have a more personal friendly chat by telephone or Zoom as topics or difficulties arise during the gaps between our meetings.
What to Bring to the Zoom Workshop?
Please bring yourself, open and curious and ready to learn some new communication tools, ready to engage in some inner exploration of ways to connect more authentically with yourself and others. We’ll be using the book Nonviolent Communication –A Language of Life, 3rd Edition, by NVC founder Marshall Rosenberg, PhD. Please get the book (see link above) and bring it to each class. In addition, bring the Feelings List and the Needs List (see links above).
About Each Class
We create a space of five minutes before the class to accommodate early birds. And since we begin each class with 10 minutes of meditation it’s best to sit quietly until the meditation begins. While meditating it’s good to look away from the screen.
Meditation instruction will be offered, or you can just sit quietly in whatever way is comfortable for you. The key is to begin each class with a quiet and open mind, ready to participate in whatever way feels right for you. It is normal to feel some excitement or anxiety before or during the class.
